Anyone selling online should consider search engine marketing (SEM) as a way of generating potential customers to their website. But what does this unique kind of marketing involve? In this article, I’ll explain a few search engine basics…

For most Internet users it’s virtually second nature to use a search engine to look for information, products or services. As expected, when they search on a particular word or combinations of words, the search engines come up with a host of results. Each result represents a website that supposedly has the information, products or services the Internet user looking for. They can click on the link and ta-da! the website does or does not give them what they want.

It’s important to note that the search engines don’t rank websites as a whole; they rank specific webpages. In any case, the higher that your webpages appear in the SERPs, the more people who are likely to see your description and click on your link. However, SEM experts tend to vary in their view on whether it’s better to have the top position in both or either the free and paid results. While most believe that having the top rank in the free results attracts the most clicks and traffic; some SEM experts believe that it’s more cost-effective to have the second, third or lower listing in the paid results. Nevertheless, most agree that you want your free and/or paid results to be on the first page.

The two main strands of search marketing are search engine optimization (SEO) and paid search. Search engine optimization is about optimizing your website (i.e. each page on the site) – known as "on-page optimization" – as well as undertaking a range of "off-page" activities designed to achieve a high ranking in the SERPs. Getting a high ranking in the SERPs of a given search engine is a function of how that search engine’s mathematical algorithm (i.e. for determining rankings) works. Often this takes a degree of study, trial and error, and hard work.

Alternatively, to achieve a high place in the paid search results, it’s largely a matter of how much you’re willing to pay. Depending on the search engine, you can pay per click – known literally as pay-per-click (PPC) advertising – or pay based on the number of impressions or views the ad receives. Having said that, the priority of your placing may also be impacted by how effective your ad is, based on the number of clicks it receives or click through rate (CTR). Google, in particular, takes the CTR into account, as well as the bid price per click, when determining the order of the paid results.

It can be a good idea to dip your toe into search marketing by starting with paid advertising – particularly PPC. Not only can you begin promoting your offer to your target market without delay, but you can also test keywords. You might decide that particularly high performing keywords should be incorporated into your webpages for SEO purposes.

The Google Page Rank or PR for short is a ranking system created by Google that assists with their search algorithm. Each website is assigned a value from zero to ten with ten being the highest. When your website is brand new it is automatically assigned a value of zero. Your goal is to get that number up to ten, which isn’t easy, but it can be done, it just takes work.

Realistically you are looking to achieve five to eight which is really good. With that said here are some techniques you can use to help increase your Google Page Rank and appear higher on those Google search listings.

Google looks favorably upon websites when other websites link back to them. The more links you have pointing to your site the better and the higher PR those sites have that is even better yet. In other words a website that has a PR of 5 that points back to your website has a higher value than a website with a PR of 1. Although there is nothing wrong with a website that has a PR of 1 pointing back to you, it just means you will need more of them.

There are two types of links that can refer back to your website, they are reciprocal links and one way links. Reciprocal links are links in which a website places a link on their website that points back to yours and in return you put a link to their website on yours. This process is also called a link exchange. You can spend many hours surfing the net and contacting websites individually or you can look up websites that are specifically designed to handle link exchanges. Doing a Google search on the words "Link Exchange" will yield you plenty of results. There are also plenty of free options out there.

One way links are exactly what the term implies. A website has a link pointing back to your website and you are not obligated to return the favor. The best way to do this is through article marketing. That is the process of where you will write an article and post it to various article directories and include a link to your website in a resource box. Then bloggers pick up your articles and post them on their blogs which includes your link. Google looks favorably upon one way links.

Finally, you can partake in discussions related to what your website is about on various social networking sites and message boards. In the discussion areas they allow you to have a signature line. In your signature line you can post a link back to your website. The more active you are in those discussions with relevant information the more often your link will appear.

There are the three ways I recommend to help increase your Google Page Rank. They are all free which is very helpful and regardless of what you read you can not go from a zero to a nine in a couple of months. The Google algorithm does not allow for it. Be prepared to work at it and in no time you can climb up that Google PR ladder.

It can be use on the main navigation of the website as well, this will also act as an anchor text for the web page. Do note that anchor text must be a keyword related to your product or services.

Off-Page Optimization For Web Page

This can be done by various ways, the most common way is to write articles that has anchor text (keyword) directing to a specific web page. The keyword must appear in the title, the content and the anchor text of the article in order to maximize the content relevancy. External linking generally comes from article submission, linking back to the related web page. Do note that a lot of people made a very serious mistake in linking back to the home page of the website, this can still be done by adding the URL of website on the resource box, yet have anchor text of the related topic pointing to the single webpage in the resource page as well.

Making Full Use Of Home Page

The home page of your website should be stuffed with lots of related keywords on it as anchor texts or navigation system of the website. The home page is usually a summary of what your product or services is all about, what you need to do is to use anchor text on the summary, and direct to the related web page. The home page can use the main primary keyword phrase you are targeting, and the other web pages on related topics of the primary keyword phrase.

Update Frequently
The last important thing is to frequently update your website, Google loves new content, it order to get them to rank you well, getting Google to visit you frequently is a must. For website I would recommend to update at least twice a week, get Google to come to your website as a habit this will help you greatly in  Search Engine Optimization  

If you have done the above 5 things consistently, you will see yourself ranking on the top of the Google search engine very soon.There is a saying that the older the website or web page the harder it gets kick off, this is true for websites that have the above tips. Google keyword research is an integral step you must take when beginning the process of building web pages or creating content, if you stand any chance of ranking high in Google search engine rankings. Finding good keywords or keyword phrases that have a lot of searches but little competition is key to getting ranked high in Google organic search results.

How to research keywords using free Keyword Research:

If you don’t want to buy one of the pay keyword tools you can simply use the Google keyword research tool which is a great tool in itself, it just takes a little more time.

Okay before we get started talking about analyzing keywords lets define some terms well be using. For keywords you have your broadest terms (known as Markets), these can be broken down into smaller more targeted groups called a niche, these can be broken down even further into a micro niche.

Concentrate on finding keywords in the "niche" or "micro niche" keywords categories when doing your research. "Market" keywords are far to difficult to rank for on Google due to the large number of websites competing for those spots. As an example Network Marketing (11,800,000 sites listed) will be way harder to rank for on Google than Network Marketing Tips (101,000 sites listed)

To start your keyword research all you want to do is go to the Google keyword tool and type in your market keyword and get keyword ideas. From here I like to sort by approximate search volume. Any keywords over 10,000 are probably too competitive, and you don’t want to go much lower then 1,000.

Find the keywords that fit the above criteria, and start typing them into Google with quotations around them. When you find some suitable keywords with less than 50,000 sites listed (less than 150,000 if you know advanced SEO), those are the keywords you want to create your content (Videos, articles, Squidoo pages, blog posts, etc.) and websites around. Make sure your content is rich with these particular keywords.

Link Directories – There are hundreds of SEO friendly (they have page rank) human edited link directories out there. One of the more common known ones would be dmoz.org. What is so great about these link directories is that they enable you to receive a large number of one way inbound links that point to your website.

As these links are human edited, in order to get into these directories you often need to have a "white hat" "non spammy" website. When you website appears in these link directories it often helps to gain more trust within the search engines and will therefore rank higher.

Video – If you are able to create a video about the topic of your website then I strongly recommend that you do. If you make the video funny and interesting it can be a way of generating huge amount of visitors to your website. With services such as youtube and google video it provides you with a way of getting your video seen by thousands of people. Which will provide your website with more exposure.

Forum Interaction – There are forum out there on nearly every topic available. Find some of the more popular ones on your website topic, join them and interact with the other members. Provide good information and become an authority figure within that forum. The benefit of that is that most forums allow you to include a signature at bottom of each post you make. The better the information that you provide the more visitors you will get to your website.

What are my thoughts on SEO?

There is no magic pill to SEO website promotion. It’s just about using your common sense. The simple fact is the more EXPOSURE that you can get for your website the more chances it has of ranking higher. By generating positive exposure for your website it will go hand in hand with improving your search engine ranking.

Why?

Because people will be more likely to place your article on their website, link to you, recommend you to friends and so forth. Ranking high in the search engines is about positive exposure. As we move into the so called web 2.0 era it becomes even more important to get people out there interested in your website topic talking about you.

If you manage to do this successfully then ranking high in the search engines and getting lots of visitors will be much easier than you think.
