If you want outstanding results, then search engine marketing is the best route to take.

If you want a tried and true way of generating heaps of traffic to your website – day in, day out – you can’t afford to ignore search engine marketing. And it’s not as complex as it may first appear. In fact, let me outline some search engine basics…

The major search engines – Google, Yahoo (a directory as well as a search engine) and MSN – generate "natural" or "organic" search results or listings, as well as sponsored (advertiser paid) listings, whenever someone performs a search on particular keywords or key phrases. As you might imagine, listings that appear on the first page of results – whether paid or organic – tend to attract the vast majority of clicks on the links included in their listings and, consequently, traffic to their websites. Therefore, if you know that the target market for your website typically uses particular keywords or key phrases to search for the kinds of information, products or services you offer… you want your listing to appear as high as possible in the search engine ranking pages or "SERPs".

While it might seem as though your best bet is to be ranked number one in the SERPs for a certain keyword or key phrase, this may not always be the case. Most search marketing practitioners certainly advocate becoming first in the organic results. However, there are diverging views about the efficacy of being first in the paid results. Some search engine marketers believe that it’s more profitable to be in the middle of the list of the paid results, as long as your ad appears on the first page of results. Additionally, the question arises: should you advertise in the paid results as well as strive for a high ranking in the organic results? There’s no hard-and-fast answer; it’s really something to experiment with.

Since SEM incorporates both paid and free search engine rankings, the means of getting high up in the free versus the paid results necessitates a some what different methodology. Search engine optimization (SEO) is how marketers get their websites and web pages ranking highly in the free results. This is part-science, part-art. The SEOs use complex math to rank different sites and pages. Therefore, if you understand how this math works, then, presumably, you’ll know what to do to get a high ranking. Trouble is, no-one knows how this math works! The SEOs keep their algorithms close to their chests. Consequently, it’s a bit of an art to try to work out the science!

Meanwhile, paid search incorporates pay-per-click advertising and pay-per-impression advertising.

Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising is as the name suggests: advertising where you pay each time someone clicks on the link in your ad. Some of the major advantages of PPC are that you only pay for the results you want – prospects clicking on your ad – and you can readily measure the effectiveness of a given keyword or ad by means of the click through rate (CTR).

The other form of paid search is pay-per-impression, where you pay a certain amount per 1,000 ad impressions (CPM). Google, in fact, uses a formula to determine how much you ultimately pay for a given advertising campaign that incorporates both the cost per click (CPC) and the CPM. I won’t get into the complexities here, but suffice to say that you can end up paying the same amount of money regardless of whether you pay based on a click or an impression, depending on your CTR. Also, Google actually favors ads with a higher CTR and takes that into account when ranking them. So you can actually get a higher listing and still pay the same per click than someone else, provided your ad is more effective for that keyword or key phrase in question.

Paying to appear in the SERPs can be a good way to get started in SEM. You can identify which words are the most effective in pulling customers to your website. You can test the popularity of a new product or service. And you can test the layout and copy on your landing pages (the specific pages that people see when they click on your listing).

No question, understanding search engine marketing involves a bit of a learning curve. But the benefits are definitely worth the effort. As many Internet marketers have discovered, an effective search engine marketing effort can yield all the traffic, and customers, you could ever want.

Anyone selling online should consider search engine marketing (SEM) as a way of generating potential customers to their website. But what does this unique kind of marketing involve? In this article, I’ll explain a few search engine basics…

For most Internet users it’s virtually second nature to use a search engine to look for information, products or services. As expected, when they search on a particular word or combinations of words, the search engines come up with a host of results. Each result represents a website that supposedly has the information, products or services the Internet user looking for. They can click on the link and ta-da! the website does or does not give them what they want.

It’s important to note that the search engines don’t rank websites as a whole; they rank specific webpages. In any case, the higher that your webpages appear in the SERPs, the more people who are likely to see your description and click on your link. However, SEM experts tend to vary in their view on whether it’s better to have the top position in both or either the free and paid results. While most believe that having the top rank in the free results attracts the most clicks and traffic; some SEM experts believe that it’s more cost-effective to have the second, third or lower listing in the paid results. Nevertheless, most agree that you want your free and/or paid results to be on the first page.

The two main strands of search marketing are search engine optimization (SEO) and paid search. Search engine optimization is about optimizing your website (i.e. each page on the site) – known as "on-page optimization" – as well as undertaking a range of "off-page" activities designed to achieve a high ranking in the SERPs. Getting a high ranking in the SERPs of a given search engine is a function of how that search engine’s mathematical algorithm (i.e. for determining rankings) works. Often this takes a degree of study, trial and error, and hard work.

Alternatively, to achieve a high place in the paid search results, it’s largely a matter of how much you’re willing to pay. Depending on the search engine, you can pay per click – known literally as pay-per-click (PPC) advertising – or pay based on the number of impressions or views the ad receives. Having said that, the priority of your placing may also be impacted by how effective your ad is, based on the number of clicks it receives or click through rate (CTR). Google, in particular, takes the CTR into account, as well as the bid price per click, when determining the order of the paid results.

It can be a good idea to dip your toe into search marketing by starting with paid advertising – particularly PPC. Not only can you begin promoting your offer to your target market without delay, but you can also test keywords. You might decide that particularly high performing keywords should be incorporated into your webpages for SEO purposes.

So there you have a quick run-down of search engine marketing. It’s definitely worth delving into further if you like the idea of building a consistent traffic stream to your web business.

We have already discussed why strong internal link structures are so essential to your SEO strategy for the company website, and we looked at how to better promote strong internal linking. Adding a sitelink map to your text link navigation menu was mentioned as one major way to ensure better internal links, and we also talked about how these maps should comply with both Google and Yahoo. It would be a worthwhile exercise to login into both these search engines and confirm that they are both indexing each of your site pages. Making sure that those pages are engine-indexed does not guarantee higher engine keyword rankings but it certainly does not hurt. At the very least, you will obtain relevant and valuable data on how well those internal links are functioning as well as which external website pages are actually linked to your internal pages.

Webmasters and SEO guys have not always been able to go to Google and Yahoo and find out if site pages are  engine-indexed  . These two engines use to steadfastly keep secret which external pages are linked to your internal ones. The SEO world has changed, however, and now Google and Yahoo recognize the importance of helping Webmasters and SEOs find out which pages are linked. So now they offer up the tools to help you.

After designing your site and engine optimizing it, and making sure that you have created an engine-friendly sitemap, you should immediately set up accounts in Google Webmasters Console and Yahoo Site Explorer. With your sitemap established, you can employ tools from the two search engines to find out if your pages are indexed.

Google Webmasters Console (www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/)

After setting up an account in Console, you can actually add one site or several sites and have multiple ones all registered on a single interface. There are several tools empowering you to obtain valuable information on your site pages:

Diagnostics Tab: find out in detail if Google spiders are having problems accessing pages (i.e. URLS not found, timed out or restricted by robots.txt, http errors).
Links Tab: click on External Links to view all external links pointing to each of your internal pages. Click on Internal Links to discover which internal pages are linked to a specific external page. In both areas you can select Numeric Link to access a list of website pages currently Google-indexed that point to each of your own pages. Links Tab probably provides you with the most valuable information you will obtain in Console.
Pages Analysis: access a Google Analysis of your site and/or page content
Sitemap Tab: create the sitemap for each of your domains, and feature all pages you want crawled.
Statistics Tab: learn about how Google PageRank is distributed on your site, and which page ranks the highest each month.

Yahoo Site Explorer (www.siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com)

After setting up an account in Explorer, you can also add one site or several sites but you have to authenticate each of your unique domain names. Tools allowing you to collect details on your pages include:

Explore: located on the administrative interface, this tool lets you view all site pages which are engine-indexed.
Inlinks: allows you to see how many pages are linked to the page you are ‘exploring’. By selecting Except From This Domain on the Show Inlinks dropdown menu you can view just the external links pointing to your site.

You are advised to visit both Console and Explorer frequently to find out which pages were recently indexed and which pages have external links pointed to them. The great news for both Webmasters and SEO people is that Google and Yahoo are finally allowing them to obtain detailed and valuable information on their website links. If you are a Webmaster or SEO person, you would do well to take advantage of such support, as it can only help you formulate a more comprehensive and effective SEO campaign!

Effective blogging is recognized by webmasters and SEO experts everywhere as a very marketable and profitable SEO tool. Regular postings on your company website blog can positively impact on your SEO campaign in several different ways:

Creating original, relevant and keyword-rich content, thereby increasing the breadth and depth of your site information base
Attracting search engine spiders to your site, thereby increasing your page rank standings
Attracting users to your site, particularly those associated with your industry, thereby increasing site traffic
Driving your company to better find its market niche in your industry

One of the great advantages of blogs concerns how well they compel inbound links to gravitate to your site. Blog content is usually industry-relevant, which leads search engines to ‘link together’ your blog postings and tag it as industry-related information. Daily industry news updates, marketing campaigns, press releases, event general banter or dialogue – it all receives credit towards your page count, particularly if you liberally include industry catchphrases, keywords and company terms.

A related plus is that regular blog postings will increase perception of your site as a valuable source of information and of your company as an industry expert. This means that the right sets of eyes are being attracted to your site. It’s even better if the information posted is new and/or thought-provoking, since this will open the door for two-way conversation. Fellow industry folk are always interested in new ideas and new forums for expressing them, so your blog can become an effective venue where different industry opinions hold fort. Relevant discussions will inevitably prompt others to contribute their own opinions or viewpoints, thus facilitating an easy, ongoing dialogue. This type of industry chatter, and the relationships which eventually develop from it, help make regular blogging a very worthwhile exercise.

Regular blogs can have a multiplier effect on your site’s page count. There are blog host applications which actually engender a unique HTML page for each individual blog entry (i.e. Moveable Type), meaning that a single new blog page can lead to lots of new pages and a real increase in your page rank standings. Search engine indexing of your site is also enhanced, since engines consider larger sites as more apt to provide better and more all-encompassing industry expertise. The more often you blog, the more pages you create and the more frequently your site will be spidered. Companies would do well to try to blog every day, Monday to Friday. Time should probably be set aside for this. Why, you could even blog on the weekends, if your better half does not mind.

Another advantage of regular blogging is that they are relatively search engine-friendly. Invariably written in simple formats which are easy to spider, blog page codes usually contain clean, text rich HTML and are devoid of non-spider-friendly Flash or JavaScript. Also, engines love the naturally written, original content produced by blogs. Google even has its own blog search, enabling users to search for information only found on blogs.

Finally, the number of inbound links attracted to your site will be significantly augmented if you submit your blog to different blog directories. This enables it to be syndicated by an RSS feed (Really Simple Syndication), facilitating the placement of your blog online. Subscribers to you RSS feed would be informed of any new updates or postings. Sites carrying blog feeds and make them available for syndication are also repeatedly spidered on a daily basis, allowing for instant indexing.

This is part one of a two part series. In this part you will learn a little about RSS feeds and how to put an RSS feed on your website or blog using just a simple Java Script. If you would like to see this article in it’s entirety please visit the link in the authors bio.

RSS is short for Real Simple Syndication. RSS is one of the best and easiest ways to add content to your blog or web site. In fact all you have to is simply set it up and it takes care of itself. You can say that bloging and site building with RSS is a set it and forget it type of thing.

There are several ways however to put RSS feeds on your web site or blog. Each way you do it has it’s advantages and disadvantages. For the purpose of simplicity we will cover the two main ways to add content to your web site via RSS feeds.

Adding RSS Feeds To Your Web Page Using Java Script

Adding RSS feeds to your web page or blog using Java Script is the simplest way to do this. Although it may be the easiest it is not by far the best way if you are looking to make spider food for the search engines.

When adding RSS feeds via Java Script the feeds content is retrieved from the RSS feeds host site. It is then displayed on your page for your visitors to see it. But that is the problem with using Java Scripts to display your RSS feeds. Only your visitor will see it. Search engine spiders will simply see nothing. This means that the search engine thinks nothing has changed but yet your visitor see’s something completely different.

To add a RSS feed using Java Script you just need to add this simple piece of code to your web site. To make this simple for everybody we will use a site that will generate our Java Script that we will use to display the RSS feed that we choose on our web page.

To start off lets go to rss-to-javascript dot com. On the left hand side you will see a button labeled RSS/RDF Converter. Go ahead and click on that one. You should now see a new page titled Convert A Feed. Simply go ahead and fill in the fields on the page. You can always go back and mess with all the various settings and republish it on your web site to see how they effect your RSS feed. When you are done go ahead and hit preview and see if works. If it does go ahead and hit Generate Java Script. This will make the code we need to display the RSS feed on your web page.

You should now be on a new page. What we want from this page is the code that will be displayed in the little white box. Go ahead and click on Highlight All and it will highlight the code. Now right click and click copy. Now go ahead and look at the code for your web page. Find out where you would like the RSS feed to be displayed and right click there and hit paste. Now simply go ahead and upload your web page again. You should now see the RSS feed on your web site.

Of course, it’s cutting edge, it’s now, it’s happening, but are you using it?

Don’t get me wrong, web 2.0 Internet Marketing is not rocket science, but you do need to be armed with the basics. Just putting a few video clips on your site, or tossing up an audio file or two that people can access or download does not make your site a web 2.0 experience. In fact this has been done for years, but what does make it web 2.0?

Here are a few things to consider before jumping head long into the world of web 2.0 Internet Marketing, and possibly a few suggestions that may make your transition into this world a bit easier.

Architecture of Participation

The first element of a well-designed web 2.0 experience is something called the Architecture of Participation. You might also hear things like RIA (Rich Internet Applications), or even SOA (Service Oriented Applications).

Despite the use of fancy buzzwords, this simply refers to the user experience. Is the site pleasing to the eye, easy to use, and most importantly does the site make it possible for visitors to participate in the content of the web site?

This could best be demonstrated by taking a look at sites such as YouTube.com, EzineArticles.com, as well as social networking sites like MySpace.com. Each of these examples has a very well planned Architecture of Participation.

Mash Ups & Integration

The next element of a true web 2.0 experience is often called the mash up, or content integration. This is actually quite simple. Again, going back to sites like MySpace.com, you’ll see that participants can implement many different sources of web content. You’ll not only see video and audio, but you’ll also see blogs, comments, and networks of friends. Many sites will also integrate content from multiple sources or sites onto a single, new web site that generates fresh content on the fly, ready for eager site visitors.

Mashing multiple streams of content onto a new web site is where the term Mash Ups actually came from, which here again, is not rocket science when you determine what content your visitors might like to see, hear, or read. It’s simply a matter of pulling the appropriate content and mashing it up into one convenient place.

Social Networking

Finally, social networking is a big part of web 2.0. Of course, it’s deeply routed in the Architecture of Participation, and it almost always implements the mash up to create unique content, but the unique factor in social networking is that it’s designed to bring like minded people together.

Networking is the key to building successful long-term business relationships, but if you’ve ever hit your friends and family up with a business opportunity, you’ve probably discovered that they’re not always as like-minded as you might have originally hoped.

Tapping into such social networks can put you, and your business or opportunity in front of literally millions of potential prospects and future business partners, and because you are networking with like-minded people, you’re not forced to go old school when it comes to pitching your opportunity or product.

Over all, web 2.0 is a major departure in traditional marketing, and is light years beyond the days of mass mailing and classified ad submission. It is a whole new mindset in terms of building relationships, by simply rethinking the design process of your next web site, and oh yeah, the best part is that web 2.0 will cost you absolutely nothing to implement into your business.

Basically, the key to web 2.0 Internet Marketing is in the user experience. Gone are the days of sit and stare web sites. With a little creativity, and a touch of web 2.0, it’s now possible to turn a one way experience into a two way stream of communication, which is the key to any business success.

Now while obviously having a quality product is crucial for long term success you need to worry about the launch more than the product. You can have the best product in the world, ten times better than your competitors but if nobody is promoting it and if no one knows about it then it is nothing more than a waste of time and effort.

Next you need to create a step by step launch plan and stick with it. This will include timing, contacts, incentives, pricing, and more. All these issues need to be dealt with prelaunch and you need to have assurance that everything is ready to go the day of.

Create a contingency plan, obviously no one goes into a product launch hoping for the worst but you definitely need to plan for it. Things that may seem like minor errors can have devastating consequences for the survival of your product. Any glitches in  affiliate payouts  or payment processing can have hundreds of business partners turn their backs on you. The important thing is to test everything and do several dry runs to make sure all the pieces of your machine are working harmoniously.

Finally one thing that you can do that not a lot of marketers take advantage off is to run a mini launch prior to the full one. This will allow you to test the critical components of your campaign before it hits the masses.

This can be done by sending out an email to a small portion of your list. If the response is low then something is not working and your product is not ready for full launch. Depending on the size of your email list you can only do this a select number of times so you need to keep an eye on all aspects of your sales funnel and track everything.

Not only are you going to waste valuable time but you are going to waste money as well. So how do you find a niche market that is going to be profitable. Put simply find things that people are already interested in buying!! Never start a niche on a whim. Use FACTS! Search for niches or products that are already sought after. Go to search engines and find out what the most popular searches for this month were for, go to places like amazon.com and do a search for the most popular product, take note of hot trends in the news papers and on T.V. etc.

The big key is to just find things that are popular and hot…things people are already hungry for and kind of overzealous ( really enthusiastic) about buying. Then do some research and find out why the product is so popular? Why do they want it? What do they like about it? Who are they? What should your approach be like? What emotions trigger that desire or need?

One other great rule of thumb to help get pointed in the right direction when trying to find a niche market is that most times than not a sure fire product will be one where people are either trying to avoid pain or gain pleasure. Did any bells go off?
