Anyone selling online should consider search engine marketing (SEM) as a way of generating potential customers to their website. But what does this unique kind of marketing involve? In this article, I’ll explain a few search engine basics…

For most Internet users it’s virtually second nature to use a search engine to look for information, products or services. As expected, when they search on a particular word or combinations of words, the search engines come up with a host of results. Each result represents a website that supposedly has the information, products or services the Internet user looking for. They can click on the link and ta-da! the website does or does not give them what they want.

It’s important to note that the search engines don’t rank websites as a whole; they rank specific webpages. In any case, the higher that your webpages appear in the SERPs, the more people who are likely to see your description and click on your link. However, SEM experts tend to vary in their view on whether it’s better to have the top position in both or either the free and paid results. While most believe that having the top rank in the free results attracts the most clicks and traffic; some SEM experts believe that it’s more cost-effective to have the second, third or lower listing in the paid results. Nevertheless, most agree that you want your free and/or paid results to be on the first page.

The two main strands of search marketing are search engine optimization (SEO) and paid search. Search engine optimization is about optimizing your website (i.e. each page on the site) – known as "on-page optimization" – as well as undertaking a range of "off-page" activities designed to achieve a high ranking in the SERPs. Getting a high ranking in the SERPs of a given search engine is a function of how that search engine’s mathematical algorithm (i.e. for determining rankings) works. Often this takes a degree of study, trial and error, and hard work.

Alternatively, to achieve a high place in the paid search results, it’s largely a matter of how much you’re willing to pay. Depending on the search engine, you can pay per click – known literally as pay-per-click (PPC) advertising – or pay based on the number of impressions or views the ad receives. Having said that, the priority of your placing may also be impacted by how effective your ad is, based on the number of clicks it receives or click through rate (CTR). Google, in particular, takes the CTR into account, as well as the bid price per click, when determining the order of the paid results.

It can be a good idea to dip your toe into search marketing by starting with paid advertising – particularly PPC. Not only can you begin promoting your offer to your target market without delay, but you can also test keywords. You might decide that particularly high performing keywords should be incorporated into your webpages for SEO purposes.

We have already discussed why strong internal link structures are so essential to your SEO strategy for the company website, and we looked at how to better promote strong internal linking. Adding a sitelink map to your text link navigation menu was mentioned as one major way to ensure better internal links, and we also talked about how these maps should comply with both Google and Yahoo. It would be a worthwhile exercise to login into both these search engines and confirm that they are both indexing each of your site pages. Making sure that those pages are engine-indexed does not guarantee higher engine keyword rankings but it certainly does not hurt. At the very least, you will obtain relevant and valuable data on how well those internal links are functioning as well as which external website pages are actually linked to your internal pages.

Webmasters and SEO guys have not always been able to go to Google and Yahoo and find out if site pages are  engine-indexed  . These two engines use to steadfastly keep secret which external pages are linked to your internal ones. The SEO world has changed, however, and now Google and Yahoo recognize the importance of helping Webmasters and SEOs find out which pages are linked. So now they offer up the tools to help you.

After designing your site and engine optimizing it, and making sure that you have created an engine-friendly sitemap, you should immediately set up accounts in Google Webmasters Console and Yahoo Site Explorer. With your sitemap established, you can employ tools from the two search engines to find out if your pages are indexed.

Google Webmasters Console (www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/)

After setting up an account in Console, you can actually add one site or several sites and have multiple ones all registered on a single interface. There are several tools empowering you to obtain valuable information on your site pages:

Diagnostics Tab: find out in detail if Google spiders are having problems accessing pages (i.e. URLS not found, timed out or restricted by robots.txt, http errors).
Links Tab: click on External Links to view all external links pointing to each of your internal pages. Click on Internal Links to discover which internal pages are linked to a specific external page. In both areas you can select Numeric Link to access a list of website pages currently Google-indexed that point to each of your own pages. Links Tab probably provides you with the most valuable information you will obtain in Console.
Pages Analysis: access a Google Analysis of your site and/or page content
Sitemap Tab: create the sitemap for each of your domains, and feature all pages you want crawled.
Statistics Tab: learn about how Google PageRank is distributed on your site, and which page ranks the highest each month.

Yahoo Site Explorer (www.siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com)

After setting up an account in Explorer, you can also add one site or several sites but you have to authenticate each of your unique domain names. Tools allowing you to collect details on your pages include:

Explore: located on the administrative interface, this tool lets you view all site pages which are engine-indexed.
Inlinks: allows you to see how many pages are linked to the page you are ‘exploring’. By selecting Except From This Domain on the Show Inlinks dropdown menu you can view just the external links pointing to your site.

You are advised to visit both Console and Explorer frequently to find out which pages were recently indexed and which pages have external links pointed to them. The great news for both Webmasters and SEO people is that Google and Yahoo are finally allowing them to obtain detailed and valuable information on their website links. If you are a Webmaster or SEO person, you would do well to take advantage of such support, as it can only help you formulate a more comprehensive and effective SEO campaign!

Effective blogging is recognized by webmasters and SEO experts everywhere as a very marketable and profitable SEO tool. Regular postings on your company website blog can positively impact on your SEO campaign in several different ways:

One of the great advantages of blogs concerns how well they compel inbound links to gravitate to your site. There are blog host applications which actually engender a unique HTML page for each individual blog entry (i.e. Moveable Type), meaning that a single new blog page can lead to lots of new pages and a real increase in your page rank standings. Search engine indexing of your site is also enhanced, since engines consider larger sites as more apt to provide better and more all-encompassing industry expertise. The more often you blog, the more pages you create and the more frequently your site will be spidered. Companies would do well to try to blog every day, Monday to Friday. Time should probably be set aside for this. Why, you could even blog on the weekends, if your better half does not mind.

Another advantage of regular blogging is that they are relatively search engine-friendly. Invariably written in simple formats which are easy to spider, blog page codes usually contain clean, text rich HTML and are devoid of non-spider-friendly Flash or JavaScript. Also, engines love the naturally written, original content produced by blogs. Google even has its own blog search, enabling users to search for information only found on blogs.

Finally, the number of inbound links attracted to your site will be significantly augmented if you submit your blog to different blog directories. This enables it to be syndicated by an RSS feed (Really Simple Syndication), facilitating the placement of your blog online. Subscribers to you RSS feed would be informed of any new updates or postings. Sites carrying blog feeds and make them available for syndication are also repeatedly spidered on a daily basis, allowing for instant indexing.

Of course, it’s cutting edge, it’s now, it’s happening, but are you using it?

Don’t get me wrong, web 2.0 Internet Marketing is not rocket science, but you do need to be armed with the basics. Just putting a few video clips on your site, or tossing up an audio file or two that people can access or download does not make your site a web 2.0 experience. In fact this has been done for years, but what does make it web 2.0?

Here are a few things to consider before jumping head long into the world of web 2.0 Internet Marketing, and possibly a few suggestions that may make your transition into this world a bit easier.

Architecture of Participation

The first element of a well-designed web 2.0 experience is something called the Architecture of Participation. You might also hear things like RIA (Rich Internet Applications), or even SOA (Service Oriented Applications).

Despite the use of fancy buzzwords, this simply refers to the user experience. Is the site pleasing to the eye, easy to use, and most importantly does the site make it possible for visitors to participate in the content of the web site?

This could best be demonstrated by taking a look at sites such as YouTube.com, EzineArticles.com, as well as social networking sites like MySpace.com. Each of these examples has a very well planned Architecture of Participation.

Mash Ups & Integration

The next element of a true web 2.0 experience is often called the mash up, or content integration. This is actually quite simple. Again, going back to sites like MySpace.com, you’ll see that participants can implement many different sources of web content. You’ll not only see video and audio, but you’ll also see blogs, comments, and networks of friends. Many sites will also integrate content from multiple sources or sites onto a single, new web site that generates fresh content on the fly, ready for eager site visitors.

Mashing multiple streams of content onto a new web site is where the term Mash Ups actually came from, which here again, is not rocket science when you determine what content your visitors might like to see, hear, or read. It’s simply a matter of pulling the appropriate content and mashing it up into one convenient place.

Social Networking

Finally, social networking is a big part of web 2.0. Of course, it’s deeply routed in the Architecture of Participation, and it almost always implements the mash up to create unique content, but the unique factor in social networking is that it’s designed to bring like minded people together.

Networking is the key to building successful long-term business relationships, but if you’ve ever hit your friends and family up with a business opportunity, you’ve probably discovered that they’re not always as like-minded as you might have originally hoped.

Tapping into such social networks can put you, and your business or opportunity in front of literally millions of potential prospects and future business partners, and because you are networking with like-minded people, you’re not forced to go old school when it comes to pitching your opportunity or product.

Over all, web 2.0 is a major departure in traditional marketing, and is light years beyond the days of mass mailing and classified ad submission. It is a whole new mindset in terms of building relationships, by simply rethinking the design process of your next web site, and oh yeah, the best part is that web 2.0 will cost you absolutely nothing to implement into your business.

Basically, the key to web 2.0 Internet Marketing is in the user experience. Gone are the days of sit and stare web sites. Creating and launching your own digital product can be one of the most rewarding and challenging things that a web entrepreneur can do. If executed correctly the rewards can be massive yet if put together haphazardly the let down can be overwhelmingly devastating.

The differences between a good product launch and a terrible one are many. It is not enough to just have a product and a decent sales page. What separates the million dollar launches is the sales network they have painstakingly created.

The important thing is to test everything and do several dry runs to make sure all the pieces of your machine are working harmoniously.

Finally one thing that you can do that not a lot of marketers take advantage off is to run a mini launch prior to the full one. This will allow you to test the critical components of your campaign before it hits the masses.

This can be done by sending out an email to a small portion of your list. If the response is low then something is not working and your product is not ready for full launch. Depending on the size of your email list you can only do this a select number of times so you need to keep an eye on all aspects of your sales funnel and track everything.

The Google Page Rank or PR for short is a ranking system created by Google that assists with their search algorithm. Each website is assigned a value from zero to ten with ten being the highest. When your website is brand new it is automatically assigned a value of zero. Your goal is to get that number up to ten, which isn’t easy, but it can be done, it just takes work.

Realistically you are looking to achieve five to eight which is really good. With that said here are some techniques you can use to help increase your Google Page Rank and appear higher on those Google search listings.

Google looks favorably upon websites when other websites link back to them. The more links you have pointing to your site the better and the higher PR those sites have that is even better yet. In other words a website that has a PR of 5 that points back to your website has a higher value than a website with a PR of 1. Although there is nothing wrong with a website that has a PR of 1 pointing back to you, it just means you will need more of them.

There are two types of links that can refer back to your website, they are reciprocal links and one way links. Reciprocal links are links in which a website places a link on their website that points back to yours and in return you put a link to their website on yours. This process is also called a link exchange. You can spend many hours surfing the net and contacting websites individually or you can look up websites that are specifically designed to handle link exchanges. Doing a Google search on the words "Link Exchange" will yield you plenty of results. There are also plenty of free options out there.

One way links are exactly what the term implies. A website has a link pointing back to your website and you are not obligated to return the favor. The best way to do this is through article marketing. That is the process of where you will write an article and post it to various article directories and include a link to your website in a resource box. Then bloggers pick up your articles and post them on their blogs which includes your link. Google looks favorably upon one way links.

Finally, you can partake in discussions related to what your website is about on various social networking sites and message boards. In the discussion areas they allow you to have a signature line. In your signature line you can post a link back to your website. The more active you are in those discussions with relevant information the more often your link will appear.

There are the three ways I recommend to help increase your Google Page Rank. They are all free which is very helpful and regardless of what you read you can not go from a zero to a nine in a couple of months. The Google algorithm does not allow for it. Be prepared to work at it and in no time you can climb up that Google PR ladder.
